How to Tell Whether Your Solar Inverter Has Failed

Learn the common signs of a solar inverter problem and why breakers, disconnects, wiring, monitoring, and utility conditions should be checked before replacement.

An inverter error or sudden loss of solar production does not always prove that the inverter has failed. The system should be diagnosed before replacement equipment is ordered.

Common warning signs

Warning signs include a persistent fault code, no production during daylight, repeated shutdowns, failure to initialize, unusual noise, heat damage, or a monitoring portal showing sustained production loss.

Other conditions can look like inverter failure

Open breakers, disconnect problems, damaged conductors, ground faults, communication failures, array-side issues, and utility-voltage conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Information to gather before service

Record the manufacturer, model, fault code, approximate date production stopped, and recent electrical or roofing work. Photographs of the display, disconnects, and breakers can help the technician prepare.
