A circuit breaker is designed to open when electrical conditions exceed safe limits. Resetting it repeatedly without finding the cause can allow a damaged circuit or appliance to worsen.
Common causes
Frequent trips may be caused by an overloaded circuit, damaged appliance, short circuit, ground fault, loose connection, deteriorated wiring, moisture, or a breaker that no longer operates correctly.
What you can observe safely
Note what was operating, whether the breaker trips immediately or after time, and whether you noticed heat, odor, noise, or flickering. Do not remove the panel cover or repeatedly reset a breaker that will not remain on.
When the condition is urgent
Leave the circuit off and request prompt service for a burning smell, visible damage, heat, arcing, smoke, water exposure, or repeated immediate tripping. Call emergency services when there is smoke or fire.
